How the project works

Trees for the Future's Forest Garden Program in Uganda trains smallholder farming families to transform exhausted, degraded land into thriving multi-layered Forest Gardens. Over a four-year journey, farmers plant thousands of trees - protective border species, nitrogen-fixing support trees, fruit and timber varieties, and food crops - creating a self-sustaining agricultural ecosystem that produces food and income year-round.

Each Forest Garden is designed and managed by the family who owns the land. Farmers receive hands-on training in agroforestry principles, seed saving, composting, and water conservation, giving them the skills and independence to steward their land for generations. As canopy cover grows, soils recover, water retention improves, and yields of food crops increase dramatically - often doubling or tripling within the first few years.

In Uganda, where land degradation and food insecurity are acute, Forest Gardens represent a proven path out of poverty. By replacing slash-and-burn practices with permanent tree cover, the program sequesters carbon, protects watersheds, and restores biodiversity - while directly improving nutrition, income, and long-term resilience for hundreds of farming families in the region.
